Granny Flats are Go - No Consent Required!

As of 15 January 2026, Kiwis can now build granny flats up to 70m2 without building consent as long as they meet certain conditions. This is great news for many of our clients as it will save them time and money navigating the consent process. Here at Kit Homes, we currently have two 70m2 design options (the Portia and Othello), with a third design currently underway.
We also have our Kit Pods range which was launched at the end of 2024 for clients who are looking for more of a pod/tiny home option, with the largest being 37.5m2 and a 2-bedroom (the Kea). All of the above options, whether they be 70m2, 37.5m2 or smaller, are perfect for a granny flat, Airbnb, bach and more.
It’s been interesting chatting with clients regarding their vision for their minor dwellings. Some have built their granny flats to house relatives (both young and old), and others have built them as a rental or to use as an Airbnb.
One particular success story has been our talented clients in Waihi Beach who built one of our 1-bedroom (30.6m2) Kit Pods next to their family home as an Airbnb. Although only completed towards the end of last year (2025), it is already receiving rave reviews and is a ‘Guest Favourite’ (top 5% of eligible listings) on Airbnb.
